5 Easy tips to cultivate more joy

We all know that life isn't a bed of roses all the time. In fact, some times life can be really fucking hard and therefore it's entirely impossible to feel happy all the time. However, it's precisely for this reason that it's important to cultivate this thing called joy. 

Imagine not worrying so much about what other people thought of you, spending less time wanting things you haven't got and wishing you weren't so stressed out all the time - well this practice can help with all these things. 

So what exactly is the difference between joy and happiness?

Well in my opinion, joy is quieter than happiness. Happiness can come and go quickly, it can feel like a huge sugar rush that leaves your body as soon as the double chocolate cake has finished and you've paid the bill.

But joy... joy lingers. To me, joy is the quiet contentment that even among the chaos there are things to feel good about.

Joy is like a slow honey drizzle that seeps into life's cracks.

Some say that happiness is an emotion whereas joy is a state of mind. 

Looking for joy is a practice because it IS subtle. But if we can start create a practice cultivating joy then it's proven to help get rid of life-overwhelm, ease feelings of anxiety and help us appreciate the small stuff. Sounds good right? Totally worth it.

So here are 5 easy ways to get a little more joy in your life. 

1. Do more of what you love

How does that sound? Maybe it sounds obviously or impossible or maybe selfish to you, but it's super important to stop saying yes to shit that we don't want to do and try and carve out more time to do things that makes us happy. It is not selfish to find time to do something that makes you happy. 

2. Spend time with people who make you feel good

Again, this might sound obvious but assess your relationships and faze out anyone who makes you feel shit about yourself or your life. There are two types of people in this world, drains and radiators - drains suck your energy and radiators fill you up. Make sure you're spending your time with radiators and getting rid of drains! 

3. Move in a way that makes you smile

I know I go on about this but that's because I'm passionate about it. Move in a way that makes you smile and laugh - maybe that's hitting a PB lifting weights or maybe it's hula hooping. Do more of it and feel those happy endorphins popping. 

4. Practice gratitude

So much of our society focuses on getting more, more, more. And if we get sucked into this (yes ASOS I'm looking at you) it's really easy to lose sight of what we've got. I challenge you to spend 10 minutes before you go to sleep thinking of 3 things you're grateful for that day. If you've had a shit day then it's even more important to do it! 

5. Spend more time in green space

Getting out into nature has been proven again and again to help us to feel happier. It helps us feel calmer, feel more grounded, decreases stress, gives us a dose of vitamin D. Spend a little time just appreciating how awesome trees are! And maybe have a picnic while you're there - because picnics are also joyous.
